Key features for the preferred option for Drummoyne include:
Introduction of a citybound AM peak bus lane from Seymour Street, Drummoyne to Rozelle.
Introduction of a citybound PM peak bus lane from Seymour Street, Drummoyne to Terry Street, Rozelle.
Implementation of a moveable median barrier through Drummoyne enabling a bus lane and three general traffic lanes citybound in the AM peak and providing improved safety for pedestrians and motorists.
Clearways through Drummoyne on both sides of Victoria Road during the AM and PM peaks.
Left turn from Cary Street to Victoria Road not permitted during the AM peak.
Median traffic lights replaced with overhead traffic lights.
How would the tidal flow traffic scheme operate in Drummoyne in the AM peak?
A moveable barrier through Drummoyne would enable a bus lane and three general traffic lanes citybound in the AM peak. This is a solid concrete barrier that is shifted by a special vehicle, so would provide improved safety for pedestrians and motorists.
The moveable median barrier would extend from Seymour Street to Iron Cove Bridge with access being maintained at all existing pedestrian crossings and intersections with the exception of Cary Street in the AM peak.
A special purpose vehicle would move the median barrier to change this section of Victoria Road to four lanes citybound and two lanes outbound in the AM peak (weekdays). Clearways would be in operation on both sides of Victoria Road in the AM peak.
The median barrier would be returned to a central position to restore three lanes each way on this section of Victoria Road at all other times (i.e. outside the AM peak traffic period).
Where would the traffic go when citybound access to Victoria Road from Cary Street is closed during the AM peak?
To maximise the benefits of a 3.5km continuous citybound bus lane through Drummoyne and Rozelle, the left turn from Cary Street into Victoria Road would be not be permitted during the AM peak.
Traffic studies demonstrate that up to a third of vehicles using Cary Street during the AM peak are “rat-running”. That is, they are travelling on minor streets between Westbourne Street and Day Street in Drummoyne. If access to Victoria Road from Cary Street is restricted during the AM peak, these vehicles would be expected to remain on Victoria Road
The remaining two-thirds of vehicles would access Victoria Road by other roads including Park Avenue, Day Street, Edwin Street, Lyons Road and Gordon Street or divert to the City West Link. The RTA would work with council in addressing local traffic matters related to this proposal.
Citybound access to Victoria Road from Cary Street would be allowed at all other times.
