Key features for the preferred option for Rozelle include:
Introduction of a citybound AM peak bus lane from Drummoyne to The Crescent, Rozelle.
Introduction of a citybound PM peak bus lane from Drummoyne to Terry Street, Rozelle.
Reduction of the median width and adjustment of line markings to create the new bus lane and maintain the existing general traffic lanes in Rozelle.
Single right turn lane into Darling Street for citybound traffic during the AM peak and dual right turn lanes at all other times.
Installation of up to two overhead gantries to advise of changed turning arrangements into Darling Street.
Extension of right turn lanes into Darling Street for both citybound and outbound traffic.
Extension of right turn lane into Terry Street for outbound traffic.
Right turn into Evans Street no longer permitted for outbound traffic.
Right turn into Gordon Street no longer permitted for citybound traffic.
Retention of the median pedestrian fencing at Darling Street.
Why is the RTA proposing to remove right turns into Gordon Street (citybound) and Evans Street (outbound) and where would the traffic go?
To achieve a continuous 3.5km citybound bus lane through Drummoyne and Rozelle, changed traffic arrangements are required in Rozelle, including removing right turns into Gordon Street for citybound traffic and Evans Street for outbound traffic.
To create the space for the bus lane in the morning it is necessary to use the existing right turn lanes as a through lane.
Traffic would be able to turn right into Darling Street and Robert Street. Traffic studies show that the right turns into Gordon and Evans streets are currently used by a small number of vehicles. During the AM peak approximately one vehicle per minute uses the right turn into Evans Street and less than one vehicle per minute uses the Gordon Street right turn.
Therefore, these closures would not create significant additional traffic in local streets.
Will the single right turn lane into Darling Street in the AM peak accommodate the additional traffic resulting from the removal of the right turn into Gordon Street?
The right turn lane into Darling Street would be extended to Wellington Street. Traffic studies indicate that a single right turn lane into Darling Street in the AM peak would have sufficient capacity for the extra traffic that currently uses the right turn into Gordon Street.
This work also considers the potential traffic growth of the Tigers development and the development of the Carrier site if it proceeds.
