On 3 December, 2007 the Minister for Roads announced a proposal to improve the efficiency and reliability of bus services on Victoria Road through Drummoyne and Rozelle.
Following three months of community consultation and further investigation the Roads and Traffic Authority has selected the preferred option to improve bus services on Victoria Road through Drummoyne and Rozelle. This project is fully funded by the NSW State Government.
The preferred option to improve the efficiency and reliability of Victoria Road bus services through Drummoyne and Rozelle would provide:
A continuous 3.5km citybound bus lane through Drummoyne to The Crescent, Rozelle during the AM peak.
A citybound bus lane through Drummoyne to Terry Street, Rozelle during the PM peak.
This would be achieved by:
Construction of a new three lane bridge over Iron Cove on the western side of the existing bridge. (

Implementation of a tidal flow traffic scheme through Drummoyne.
AM peak closure of the left turn from Cary Street to Victoria Road.
Introduction of AM and PM peak clearways on both sides of Victoria Road through Drummoyne.
Changed traffic arrangements in Rozelle, including the closure of right turn access from Victoria Road at Gordon (citybound) and Evans (outbound) streets.
The RTA will now complete an environmental assessment of the preferred option in accordance with the requirements of the Department of Planning.
The transport task on Victoria Road
Victoria Road is a major arterial road connecting the Parramatta and Sydney central business districts.
Around 200,000 bus passengers travel on Victoria Road each week. Up to 170 buses, with more than 8000 passengers, travel between Gladesville Bridge and The Crescent at Rozelle during typical weekday morning peak periods.
Victoria Road is heavily congested through Drummoyne and Rozelle, particularly in the morning peak, due to the large number of vehicles in the corridor and the road network in general. |
Questions and answers
The RTA has prepared a list of questions and answers about the preferred option for bus lanes on Victoria Road and the new bridge crossing. This information is in the section marked background to the proposal. To find out more click on the links below:
What happens next?
The RTA will now complete an environmental assessment of the preferred option as required under Part 3A of the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act 1979.
The environmental assessment will address the Director-General’s requirements that were issued by the Department of Planning (DoP) and will contain a draft Statement of Commitments indicating the measures proposed by the RTA to minimise any potential impacts on the environment.
The environmental assessment will be placed on public display, during which time the community and other stakeholders will be invited to comment.
The RTA may then be required to respond to the issues raised in submissions and may also modify the proposal In accordance with submissions and the environmental assessment.
The Department of Planning will then provide an assessment report for consideration by the Minister for Planning. The Minister will make a final decision on the proposal.
