Safer car park access and pedestrian bridge

Proposed works

Incorporate car park ingress and egress into the traffic lights at the intersection of Spit and Parriwi roads.

Replace the signalised pedestrian crossing with a pedestrian bridge.

Benefits

The proposal to incorporate the carpark access at the traffic signals at Spit Road and Parriwi Road will greatly enhance safety as it will eliminate the current conflicting movements in and out of the carpark. It will also benefit city bound through traffic on Spit Road since this traffic will no longer get caught behind traffic waiting to turn right into the carpark.

The proposal to erect a pedestrian bridge across Spit Road will benefit pedestrians by increasing safety and also by allowing pedestrians to cross at any time since they don’t have to wait for activation of traffic signals. Motorists will benefit by improved traffic flow since their journey will not be interrupted by pedestrians crossing Spit Road.

The overall operation and efficiency of the traffic signals should also be improved by the removal of the pedestrian phase across Spit Road.

Progress

The construction works relating to the Spit Road and Parriwi Road intersection upgrade are scheduled to approximately start in late 2009 and be completed by mid 2010.

The pedestrian overbridge is scheduled for construction approximately in mid 2010 and be completed by mid 2011.
