Mamre Road bridge duplication over the M4 Motorway

The Mamre Bridge duplication project was completed ahead of schedule on Friday 27 March 2009.

Construction started in February 2008 to build a second parallel bridge west of the original Mamre Road Bridge, together with work on the approaches and M4 Motorway exit and entry ramps.

The original two lane bridge now carries southbound traffic and the new bridge carries northbound traffic.

A shared cyclist/pedestrian pathway has been installed on the new bridge and the existing pedestrian pathway retained on the existing bridge.

The $15 million project was fully funded by the NSW Government.

Background

Mamre Road crosses the M4 Motorway at St Marys/St Clair.  The original Mamre Road bridge was built in 1972 in conjunction with the construction of the M4 Western Motorway, and is used by approximately 32,000 vehicles per day.

Mamre Road, in conjunction with Elizabeth Drive and the Great Western Highway, provides a link between the regional centres of Liverpool and St Marys/Penrith.

The original bridge had two traffic lanes, one in each direction; however, the approaches to it had four lanes, two in each direction.  As a result, Mamre Road experienced significant queuing and delays northbound during the morning peak and southbound during the afternoon peak.

Benefits

The duplication of the Mamre Road bridge will:

  • Reduce congestion and delays, particularly during peak traffic times.
  • Increase capacity for traffic entering and exiting the M4 Motorway at this location.
  • Improve local access for vehicles and pedestrians.
  • Improve safety and efficiency on Mamre Road for all road users.
  • Have economic benefits, including reduced transport costs due to delays.
  • Improve bus services using Mamre Road.

The NSW Government is proposing to build a second bridge at Mamre Road over the M4 Motorway. This project has been brought forward in response to community concern about the bridge.
