The Lane Cove Tunnel

New bus lanes on Epping Road

Years of planning, community consultation and construction have gone into the Lane Cove Tunnel project. The approved Lane Cove Tunnel and expanded Gore Hill Freeway project included a $35 million upgrade of Epping Road to provide dedicated bus priority, a new bus interchange, new turning lanes for local traffic and better cyclist facilities.

Improvements for public transport users

  • Bus lanes: There will be 2.8 km of 24 hour bus lanes in both directions between Mowbray Road and Parklands Avenue.
  • A bus interchange at Longueville Road: The $5 million interchange will cater for 400 buses heading towards the city each week day. Two lanes for buses to stop means safer boarding and disembarking and will minimise queuing. Shelters will provide all-weather protection for passengers.

Improvements for motorists with two or more passengers

Transit lanes: There will be a morning peak T3 lane on Epping Road city bound between Pittwater Road and Mowbray Road West and a 24 hour T2 lane in each direction on the Gore Hill Freeway between the Pacific Highway and Merrenburn Avenue.

  • Opening of new dedicated T2 off-ramp linking the Lane Cove Tunnel to the Gore Hill Freeway T2 lane: This will provide a direct link to the 24 hour T2 lane on the Gore Hill Freeway, used by buses and cars with 2 or more passengers.

Improvements for pedestrian and cyclists

  • A new pedestrian overpass at Longueville Road will link to the new bus interchange.
  • Improved pedestrian safety with a signalised crossing at Cox's Lane.
  • Completion of the 7.5 kilometre cycle and pedestrian path between Naremburn and North Ryde.(later in 2008)

Improved local traffic access

  • New right turn lane from Epping Road westbound at Parklands  Avenue
  • New right turn lane from Epping Road westbound at Centennial Avenue
  • Additional right turn lane from Epping Road to Sam Johnson Way citybound: This will provide additional turning capacity to the Lane Cove West business park.

Traffic changes

  • One general traffic lane westbound between Centennial Avenue and Sam Johnson Way. Other sections of Epping Road will have 2 general westbound traffic lanes.
  • One general traffic lane eastbound between Mowbray Road and Longueville Road.
