Background
On 14 June 2006 the Minister for Roads announced that a new pedestrian bridge would be provided over the Warringah Freeway in the vicinity of Falcon Street. The Minister's announcement responded to representations made by the Cammeray/Neutral Bay community and North Sydney Council who had identified a need for additional pedestrian and cyclist facilities in the vicinity of the Warringah Freeway and Falcon Street at Cammeray and Neutral Bay.
Proposed Falcon Street pedestrian and cyclist facilities
The proposed improvements include:
the construction of a new pedestrian and cyclist bridge crossing Warringah Freeway on the northern side of Falcon Street, providing a continuous link from Military Road to Falcon Street.
A pedestrian underpass at the eastern abutment of the Falcon Street Road bridge.
The new pedestrian bridge will be funded through the use of advertising in the North Sydney local government area, in line with appropriate road safety and planning approvals.
Involving the community
A community focus group was established in July 2006 to provide input to the project option selection process and the preparation of the review of environmental factors. The group included representatives from residents, local community groups, Bicycle NSW and North Sydney Council. The meetings commenced in late July and ran until late September 2006.
A display of the proposed option for the pedestrian bridge and underpass and the review of environmental factors was displayed from 22 November through to 20 December 2006.
The community was encouraged to comment on the proposal and more than 100 submissions were received, many indicating support for the proposal.
Additional facilities identified
As a result of community feedback to the 2006 review of environmental factors, the proposal has increased to include the following:
- A new ramp to the existing Ridge Street pedestrian bridge.
- Construction of a ramp in addition to the stairs at the southern ascent of the Falcon Street underpass.
- A shared path linking the southern side of the proposed Falcon Street underpass to Alfred Street north.
A supplementary review of environmental factors was recently completed and approved after consultation with residents in the vicinity of the proposed additional facilities.
It is proposed to include the Ridge Street bridge ramp and a ramp at the southern side of the Falcon Street underpass in the current project. Completion of the link to Alfred Street north may be undertaken in the future.
What's happening now
This project is approved by the RTA for construction.
The approval process for advertising to fund the project is underway. Construction of the facilities is currently scheduled to commence in 2008.
The community will be notified of the decision to proceed.
