F5 Freeway northbound widening Between Prestons and Ingleburn

The widening of the F5 Freeway (Hume Highway) northbound from two to four lanes between Brooks Road, Ingleburn and Camden Valley Way, Prestons commenced in March 2007.

This is a jointly funded project by the Australian and NSW governments.

The project is expected to be completed by mid 2008.

Background

The F5 Freeway extends south of the M5 Motorway at Prestons. The Westlink M7 now connects to the F5 Freeway and to cater for increased traffic the RTA has built extra southbound lanes between Camden Valley Way and Brooks Road, Ingleburn. Works have now commenced to widen the F5 Freeway northbound from two to four lanes between Brooks Road, Ingleburn and Camden Valley Way, Prestons. The new lanes are being built in what is currently the central median area.

Project features

  • New road pavement to provide four lanes on the northbound carriageway.
  • Asphalt overlay on most of the existing roadway to strengthen the pavement.
  • New safety barriers.
  • Replacement of kerb and gutter.
  • Stormwater drainage improvements.
  • Widening of the Brooks Road entry ramp to accommodate turning B-double trucks.
  • Landscaping of this section of freeway.
  • Noise barriers in the Denham Court area.

Project benefits

  • Upgrading this section of the F5 Freeway will provide benefits for both the local community and long-distance traffic including:
  • Improved travel times and safety for local and long-distance traffic.
  • Improved road surface.
  • Extra lanes to improve traffic flow and to alleviate congestion.
  • The widening will ensure this section of the F5 Freeway meets traffic demand with a consistent travel speed.

Current works

Construction on the F5 Freeway northbound widening commenced in March 2007.  The first stage of the project was completed in November 2007 providing four lanes north of the Camden Valley Way exit ramp.  Traffic was switched over onto the new pavement beneath and immediately south of the Campbelltown Road overbridge in mid January 2008. The traffic will be switched on to the new lanes within the central median in mid March 2008 for the remainder of works.

Widening and asphalt overlay works will continue progressively along the F5 Freeway until all works are completed by mid 2008.

The majority of works will be carried out Monday to Friday from 7am to 6pm and Saturday from 8am to 1pm.  Some out-of-hours works will be required.  Affected residents will be notified by letter prior to these works taking place.

What happens next

Construction of the pavement in the median area is continuing. This will allow traffic to be systematically switched over to the new lanes as they are completed.  The work will then focus on the reconstruction and strengthening of the existing lanes.

Works have commenced in the median adjacent to the Brooks Road entry ramp and across MacDonald Road overbridge where lane widths are reduced.

To ensure the safety of motorists and workers in this area the work zone speed limit has been reduced from 80kph to 60kph for a distance of 500 metres. This work zone speed restriction will remain in place until mid May 2008.  Motorists are asked to take care and follow the temporary speed zone signage throughout the work site.
