Cross City Tunnel

The Cross City Tunnel opened to traffic on 28 August 2005. The project has been designed to improve east/west travel across the Sydney central business district, thereby freeing up the important north/south movement, especially for buses. It avoids up to 18 sets of traffic lights reducing trips across the city to two minutes.

The tunnel provides a direct connection between the Western Distributor/ Darling Harbour and New South Head Road, Rushcutters Bay. There are links to the Eastern Distributor and harbour crossings - see details below.

Eastbound and westbound traffic travels in separate two-lane tunnels - each 2.1 kilometres long.

The Cross City Tunnel has full electronic tolling. You need to pay your toll with an electronic tag or a new electronic pass.

Access to the tunnel

From the East: Enter from New South Head Road in Rushcutters Bay to access:

  • The Anzac Bridge/Western Distributor.
  • The harbour crossings at the Sir John Young Crescent exit.
  • CBD north at the Sir John Young Crescent exit.
