Camden Valley Way upgrade

The Roads and Traffic Authority (RTA) has developed a concept design to widen Camden Valley Way from a two lane road to a four lane divided road between Narellan Road and Cobbitty Road, Harrington Park.

This design was on display until 9 October 2009.Comments on the design proposal are now being reviewed.

The Narellan Road to Cobbitty Road will be the next stage to be constructed. Construction of the intersection of Camden Valley Way and Cobbitty Road has already commenced (funded by developers).

Features of proposed road upgrade

  • Upgrade from a two lane to a four lane divided road.
  • Two metre wide shoulders.
  • Vehicle speed limit of 80km/h between Cobbitty Road and Anderson Road.
  • Vehicle speed limit of 60km/h between Anderson Road and Narellan Road.
  • Off-road shared pedestrian/cyclist path on the western side of the road.
  • Adjustments to public utilities such as gas, electricity and telephone services along the route.
  • A wide central median between Anderson Road and Cobbitty Road, with landscaping consistent with other upgraded sections of Camden Valley Way.
  • Designated turning lanes and bicycle lanes at signalised intersections.
  • Bus priority lanes at signalised intersections and indented bus bays on each side of Camden Valley Way.

Benefits of the project

Improved safety for motorists and pedestrians by:

  • Reducing the number of turning movements.
  • Constructing a central median.
  • Constructing turning bays at intersections.
  • Reduced travel times.
  • Improved access to the M7 and M5 motorways.
  • Improved access for road freight in Sydney’s south west.
  • Improved access and safety for cyclists and pedestrians.
  • New bus priority at signalised intersections.
  • Improved landscaping.

What happens next?

Community comments will be carefully assessed by the RTA in finalising the design and preparing the review of environmental factors.

Once the detailed design is completed, the RTA will invite tenders for construction. It is anticipated that construction will commence in late 2010. This work will adjoin the section that is being funded through private contributions.

The RTA will continue to liaise with the community during the design and then throughout construction.
