Camden Valley Way upgrade – Cobbitty Road, Harrington Park to Cowpasture Road, Horningsea Park

The Roads and Traffic Authority (RTA) has developed a concept design for the widening of Camden Valley Way from a two lane road to a four lane divided road between Cobbitty Road, Harrington Park and Cowpasture Road, Horningsea Park.

This design is on display from Monday 12 October 2009 until Friday 13 November 2009.

Comments on this design are invited until Friday 13 November 2009.

Features of proposed road upgrade

  •  An upgrade from a two lane to a four lane divided road.
  • Two metre wide shoulders.
  • Vehicle speed limit of 80km/h.
  • A 3 metre wide off-road shared pedestrian/cyclist path on the western side of the road.
  • New traffic lights to access Forest Lawn Cemetery at Leppington.
  • New traffic lights at Cowpasture Road (south).
  • Re-alignment of Denham Court Road and Ingleburn Road to a four way intersection with traffic lights.
  • Traffic lights at Heath Road, St Andrews Road, Raby Road, Catherine Field Road and Springfield Road.
  • Adjustments to public utilities such as gas, electricity and telephone services along the route.
  • A wide central median with landscaping consistent with other upgraded sections of Camden Valley Way.
  • The wide central median will allow for future widening to six lanes, when required in the future.
  • Designated turning lanes and bicycle provisions at traffic lights.
  • Bus priority at traffic lights and indented bus bays on each side of Camden Valley Way.
  • Twin bridges over the heritage Sydney water canal would be built so that the canal is not impacted.
  • Access to Raby House maintained.
  • Existing properties on Camden Valley Way would continue to have direct access until precinct development takes place.
  • The upgrade of the road would require the removal of some trees along the road corridor, with the RTA seeking to retain as many healthy trees as reasonably possible.

Benefits of the project

  • Improved safety for motorists and pedestrians by:
    • Reducing the number of turning movements.
    • Constructing a central median, to separate opposing traffic flows.
    • Constructing turn bays at intersections.
  • Reduced travel times.
  • Improved access to the M7 and M5 motorways.
  • Improved access and travel times for road freight in Sydney’s south west.
  • Improved access and safety for cyclists and pedestrians by providing an off-road shared path.
  • New bus priority lanes at traffic lights.
  • Improved landscaping.

What happens next?

Community comments will be carefully assessed by the RTA in finalising the design and preparing the review of environmental factors.

The RTA will liaise with the community during the design and then throughout construction.
