The Roads and Traffic Authority (RTA) will implement the summer weekend and public holiday clearway restrictions on Bondi Road westbound, from Sandridge Street to Council Street, on a permanent basis following the success of the trial clearway conducted during last summer (6 December 2008 – 1 March 2009).
The clearway will be in place on Bondi Road westbound from 3pm to 7pm on weekends and public holidays between 1 December and 1 March each year.
Background
In 2008, the RTA supported a request from State Transit Authority (STA) to trial a westbound clearway along Bondi Road, between Sandridge Street and Council Street, Bondi.
The objective of the clearway trial was to improve bus travel times, which would deliver benefits of improving bus service reliability, reducing commuter travel time from Bondi Beach to Bondi Junction, improve access to bus services and encourage increased public transport use along Bondi Road.
Results of 2008/09 trial
The STA reported more than 95 per cent of their services achieved the timetable, with no cancellation of services. Traffic flows improved and delays were reduced, as motorists could travel on two road lanes. These results are seen as a significant improvement over previous years, where bus services would run late and/or were cancelled.
Community feedback received during the trial focused on the loss of vehicle access to the Bondi Road shopping precinct and increased demand for parking on residential side streets.
What happens next?
The clearway restrictions commence from 1 December 2009.
The RTA is working closely with Waverley Council to implement parking changes on residential side streets to compensate for the parking spaces removed during the operating times of the clearways.
