The Bangor Bypass is being delivered in two stages.
Stage 1 was opened to traffic on 7 February 2005 and provides a four-lane, divided road between Woronora Bridge and Alfords Point Road, bypassing Menai Road.

Stage 2 will provide a 1.2 kilometre road linking New Illawarra Road in the south with Bangor Bypass (or east-west link) and Alfords Point Road in the north. It is due to be completed by late 2010.
Bangor Bypass Stage 2
Final design
Following community workshops and displays, the RTA selected a preferred design for Stage 2.
For more information on the final design please click here for the August 2008 community update.
The features of the final design include:
- A four lane divided road between Bangor Bypass and Recreation Drive.
- Removal of direct vehicular access between Ella Avenue and Old Illawarra Road/Australia Road.
- Traffic signals at the new T-intersection of Ella Avenue and New Illawarra Road.
- Traffic signals at the intersection of Old and New Illawarra roads to replace the existing roundabout. These signals will control and regulate traffic from all directions and provide for safe pedestrian and cyclist movements.
- A shared use pedestrian/cyclist path along Old Illawarra Road between Barden Road and Recreation Drive.
- The adjustment of the Old and New Illawarra roads intersection toward the east to avoid the perimeter of the old tip site, minimise potential disturbance to the existing creek and avoid land allocated for a proposed golf course.
- The connection from New Illawarra Road to Marsden Road will be removed and the area landscaped.
Work to date
The RTA and the selected contractor, Nace Civil Engineering P/L, have been working to ensure all required construction and environmental management plans are in place and meet the Modified Conditions of Approval, as issued by the NSW Department of Planning.
A site compound has been established in the bushland to the west of Barden Ridge and south of Ella Avenue, and is adjacent to the new road corridor.
Upcoming work
Construction work will shortly commence on Bangor Bypass Stage 2. Until February 2010, works will focus on:
- Establishing traffic control measures.
- Reconfiguring the existing New Illawarra Road/Old Illawarra Road roundabout.
- Reconfiguring road lanes and constructing a new retaining wall on New Illawarra.
- Road between Recreation Drive and Old Illawarra Road.
- Clearing trees and other vegetation within the new road corridor.
- Earthworks for the new road.
- Relocating utilities.
The hours of work are 7am to 6pm Monday to Friday and 8am to 1pm Saturday. Where night works are required at night, the community will be notified in advance.

External appointments
Under the Modified Conditions of Approval approved by the NSW Department of Planning for Bangor Bypass Stage 2, the RTA was required to appoint two external representatives who would act as independent experts/observers to the project, and ensure the RTA meets the obligations of the Modified Conditions of Approval.
The appointed representatives may also serve as mediators between the community and the project team where issues are seen to be unresolved or need further attention.
The independent community liaison representative is Denise Wilson, and may be contacted during construction hours on phone 02 9460 8500.
The environmental management representative is Rob MacQueen, and may be contacted during construction hours on phone 02 8456 7374.
While contact details for the representatives are provided above, it is important to contact the RTA and its contractor, Nace Civil Engineering P/L, in the first instance to resolve issues relating to project construction.
