Why the Bangor Bypass is needed
Menai Road is an important thoroughfare for southern Sydney, serving as an east-west route between the Princes Highway at Sutherland and Alfords Point Road at Menai. It also forms part of a cross-regional link between the key residential and employment centres of Sutherland and Bankstown. Similarly, Old Illawarra Road is a key north-south route, providing access between Heathcote Road and Alfords Point Road.
In recognition of the issues associated with current and future traffic congestion on Menai Road and Old Illawarra Road, the NSW Government has, in consultation with the local community, proposed the Bangor Bypass. The project will significantly enhance the efficiency and safety of road based travel in southern Sydney as well as offering valuable opportunities for improvements to the local urban environment. The Bangor Bypass proposal supports initiatives outlined in Action for Transport 2010 relating to the development of the road network between southern Sydney and Bankstown and a cross-regional bus route between Miranda and Bankstown.
