In February 2007, the RTA commenced work to duplicate Alfords Point Bridge over the Georges River between Alfords Point and Padstow Heights.
The duplication project was completed and opened to traffic on 21 August 2008 and consists of two parallel bridges, each with two lanes plus a breakdown lane. The existing bridge carries northbound traffic and the new bridge carries southbound traffic.
This project was fully funded by the NSW Government.
Background
The original three-lane Alfords Point Bridge was opened in 1973. It replaced a vehicular punt that operated between Lugarno and Illawong. At the time the first bridge was built, the piles and abutments for a second bridge were also constructed.
In 1989 to manage peak traffic flows on Alfords Point Bridge, a ‘tidal flow’ arrangement was introduced in which two of the three lanes operated northbound during the morning peak, switching to two lanes operating southbound during the evening peak. The opening of the second bridge has removed the need for the tidal flow arrangement on the bridge and improved the safety of motorists.
Bridge duplication
The new bridge was constructed on the existing piles and abutments, and provides two lanes for southbound traffic, a breakdown lane/shoulder and a 3.3m wide shared pedestrian and cyclist path. With the completion of the new bridge, the existing bridge has now been converted to two lanes for northbound traffic with a breakdown lane/shoulder.
The Alfords Point Bridge duplication was designed to ensure compatibility with the existing structures and looks similar to the existing bridge.
Construction work for the bridge duplication was undertaken by Abigroup. The project was completed and opened to traffic on 21 August 2008.
Benefits of the Alfords Point bridge duplication
The removal of the tidal flow arrangements on the original Alfords Point Bridge during the morning and evening peak periods.
Improved road safety and traffic flow in both directions.
Provision of a shared pedestrian/cyclist path.
