Display of modification to an approved project

Moree town centre bypass/Gwydir Highway connection - display of environmental assessment

The northern section of the bypass is currently under construction and is due for completion by the end of 2009. This section includes the new bridge over the Mehi River and the road to the north.

The southern section of the bypass, yet to be constructed, consists of a road south of the new bridge over the Mehi River. Construction of the southern section to Bullus Drive has been delayed due to land contamination between Gosport Street and the railway line.

Whilst these issues are being resolved, the RTA proposes to build the Gwydir Highway connection. This proposed connection would allow vehicles to use the northern section of the bypass (bypassing the town centre) and travel along the Gwydir Highway (Alice Street) to reconnect to the existing Newell Highway (Frome Street).

The RTA is required under Part 3A of the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act (1979) to undertake an environmental assessment of the Gwydir Highway connection. This assessment focuses on the key issues identified by the Department of Planning, and other agencies, as important to evaluate this proposal. These issues include potential social, economic and environmental impacts.

The environmental assessment of the Gwydir Highway connection will be on public display for a period of 30 days from 14 October to 16 November 2009. The community is encouraged to review the document and make a submission prior to the assessment of the proposal by the Department of Planning and decision by the Minister for Planning.
