Replacement of Adelong Creek bridges

The Roads and Traffic Authority (RTA) is replacing the existing Adelong Creek and Adelong Flood Channel bridges with one new concrete bridge. The bridges are located on the Snowy Mountains Highway in the township of Adelong.

The timber beam bridges were built in 1903 and require replacement after over 100 years of service.  Both bridges are substandard in width and incapable of carrying modern traffic loadings in the long term.

The $8 million project is funded by the NSW Government.

The project

The RTA is replacing the existing bridges with a new 62 metre long concrete bridge.  The new bridge will be constructed on the same alignment as the existing bridges and will be designed to cater for a 1 in 50 year flood event.

Nelmac Pty Ltd. of Yackandandah, has been awarded the contract to build the new crossing.

Construction is scheduled to commence in February 2010 and is expected to take up to 45 weeks to complete.

Key features of the new road bridge

  • A 62 metre long, four span, reinforced concrete bridge.
  • A two lane, 11 metre wide deck with an asphalt wearing surface.
  • A two metre wide pedestrian footway.
  • Modern street lighting.

Benefits

  • Improved safety and traffic efficiency.
  • Improved structural load capacity to cater for heavy vehicles.
  • Significantly less maintenance, resulting in reduced costs and inconvenience to motorists.
  • Improved pedestrian and mobility scooter access over Adelong Creek.

Construction

The new bridge will be constructed in half widths to maintain a single lane for traffic at all times.  Traffic signals will be used to control traffic flow.

The project will be constructed in two stages:

  • Stage 1 involves constructing the southbound section of the new bridge.  Traffic will be diverted to the northbound traffic lane of the existing bridge.  This stage is currently expected to take 20 weeks.
  • Stage 2 involves constructing the northbound section of the new bridge.  Traffic will be diverted to the new southbound lane.  This stage is currently expected to take 20 weeks.

Pedestrian access

During construction of the new bridge, pedestrian access through the site will not be available.  To provide pedestrian access across Adelong Creek, the RTA has funded construction of a new pedestrian bridge approximately 100 metres downstream of the road bridge.

Construction of the pedestrian bridge was completed in May 2009 by Tumut Shire Council. It will be a permanent Council facility for the benefit of the community.

Community consultation

The RTA consulted with affected residents, businesses and the Adelong Progress Association.  The community will be advised of changes to traffic conditions when construction commences.
