The RTA is planning to upgrade 6.3 kilometres of the Princes Highway to four lanes between Kinghorne Street and Forest Road at South Nowra.
The RTA has completed environmental assessments for the southern section between Warra Warra Road and Forest Road.
The RTA has also completed a concept design for the northern section of the proposal through the South Nowra business area, between Kinghorne Street and Warra Warra Road. An environmental assessment of this design is now available for public comment until Friday 18 December 2009.
The proposed upgrade would:
- Complete consistent four lane conditions on the Princes Highway between Bomaderry and Jervis Bay Road.
- Improve road safety by reducing conflicts between through traffic and local traffic accessing business premises.
- Improve road safety by providing a central median, along with more opportunities to safely overtake slower vehicles.
- Improve travel times and reduce vehicle operating costs through increased road and intersection capacity.
- Improve access to many business properties.
- Improve safety and facilities for pedestrians and cyclists.
Key features of the proposed upgrade from Kinghorne Street to Warra Warra Road would include:
- Generally two lanes in each direction.
- Three southbound lanes between Quinns Lane and Warra Warra Road, with the left lane for access to business premises.
- A two-way service road between Quinns Lane and Central Avenue providing access to the business premises on the western side of the highway.
- Retention of the existing southbound right-turn into Flinders Road in the interim.
- Approximately 3 kilometres of new off-road shared pedestrian/cyclepath from Kinghorne Street to Warra Warra Road.
- Upgraded intersections of the Princes Highway with Hillcrest Avenue, Nowra Hill Road, WarraWarra Road, BTU Road and Forest Road.
- Hillcrest Avenue would have a new two-lane roundabout.
Key features of the upgrade from Warra Warra Road to Forest Road would include:
- Warra Warra Road would have a new two-lane roundabout to provide a U-turn facility at the southern edge of the South Nowra business area.
- BTU Road would have a new intersection with dedicated lanes for all turns to and from the highway.
- Forest Road would have a new intersection with dedicated lanes for all turns to and from the highway.
