Project overview
A 54 kilometre section of Main Road 92 (MR92) between Hames Road (15km southwest of Nowra) and Nerriga is being upgraded and sealed by the NSW Roads and Traffic Authority, the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government and Shoalhaven City Council.
Funding of $80 million was announced in January 2001, comprising $34 million each from the NSW and Australian governments and $12 million from Shoalhaven City Council.
The project is being constructed in stages and the eastern 24 kilometre section (Hames Road to eastern boundary of Morton National Park) has been constructed by Cut and Fill Pty Ltd. It was opened to traffic in June this year and included the reconfiguration of the Turpentine Road junction and realignment of four kilometres at Georges Yard, 18 kilometres west of Hames Road.

Current activity
A contract has been awarded to Nace Civil Engineering Pty Ltd to construct the second stage of the MR92 upgrade. This next stage of the project involves upgrading nine kilometres of the route, from 44 kilometres west of Hames Road to Nerriga, including construction of a new bridge near Bulee Gap. Clearing commenced in November 2007.
This stage will also involve building several high retaining walls along the steeply graded Bulee Mountain section. A large fauna underpass will be located near the Endrick River to allow koalas and other wildlife to move under the route safely.
Motorists are advised to drive carefully on the remaining sections of gravel road as the road conditions are variable. Particular care should be taken in wet weather as unsealed sections of the road can become slippery.
