The NSW Roads and Traffic Authority (RTA) and Roads ACT have developed a preferred option for the upgrade of Lanyon Drive between Tompsitt Drive and the Monaro Highway.
This project is funded by the NSW and Australian governments and was on display for public comment in July 2008.
The preferred option
The preferred option consists of:
- Dual carriageway - each carriageway would consist of two 3.4 metre wide traffic lanes and a 2 metre wide shoulder.
- Two new bridges over the existing railway, one to accommodate westbound traffic and the other to replace the existing bridge.
- The existing bridge at Jerrabomberra Creek would be widened and a new bridge constructed to accommodate the dual carriageway.
Lanyon Drive duplication is being staged over a number of years. Construction works at the intersection of the Monaro Highway and Lanyon Drive have commenced, this work is being carried out by Roads ACT.
Benefits of the preferred option
- Reduced peak hour delays and queuing at the intersection of Lanyon Drive and the Monaro Highway.
- Reduced vehicle operating costs and improved traffic flow between Queanbeyan and the ACT.
- Improved road safety.
- Capacity retained for a future interchange at the intersection of the Monaro Highway (southbound) and Lanyon Drive.
- Reduced environmental impacts.
- Less impacts on traffic during construction.
