Kiama Bypass access ramps

The Roads and Traffic Authority in consultation with Kiama Council has investigated options to construct additional access ramps to the Kiama Bypass. Following the display of a shortlist of five options in April and May 2005, further engineering, environment and financial studies have been undertaken to determine the location of the new southbound off and northbound on ramps.

The selected proposal:

The five options put on display were assessed against social, land use, traffic and engineering considerations. Following consideration of the options it was determined that the ramp locations providing the greatest overall benefit for the community were:

  • Southbound off ramp at Munna Munnora Creek
  • Northbound on ramp at Bland Street.

Benefits

  • Greatest reduction of traffic in the Kiama central business district.
  • Greatest immediate use of ramps.
  • No height restrictions.
  • Ramps are most centrally located.
  • Ramps would cater for future growth.
  • Most cost effective.

Project Update

The construction works on the north bound on- ramp were commenced in September 2007. The works involve the construction works of the new ramp onto the Princes Highway off Bland Street, construction of a 128m long concrete retaining wall and construction of a new roundabout on Bland Street.

Major works on the south bound off-load ramp were commenced in January 2008. The works involve the relocation of a 160m water main, construction of a new ramp off Princes Highway onto South Kiama Drive and construction works on the new intersection at South Kiama Drive.
All construction works are expected to be completed by late 2008.

Changed traffic conditions

Lane closures are implemented from time to time on Princes Highway as part of the construction works. Motorists are asked to follow all road directions, obey all temporary speed limits and drive with caution through the site whilst work is in progress to ensure the safety of workers and motorists.

Construction hours

Construction hours are Monday to Friday from 7am to 6pm and Saturdays from 8am to 1pm.  Some work may be required outside these hours however residents and motorists will be given advanced notification if this is necessary.

Review of environmental factors

The NSW Roads and Traffic Authority (RTA) proposes to construct a southbound exit ramp linking the Princes Highway to South Kiama Drive (Proposal site 1) and a northbound entry ramp linking Bland Street to the Princes Highway (Proposal site 2). Each of the proposed ramps would feature a single travel lane with shoulders and guardrails.

Submission report

This Submission Report relates to the Review of Environmental Factors (REF) prepared for the proposed construction of a northbound entry ramp and a southbound exit ramp on the Princes Highway, Kiama (Kiama Bypass).

Community update

The Roads and Traffic Authority in consultation with Kiama Council has been investigating options to construct additional access ramps to the Kiama Bypass. The 5.3km long Princes Highway Kiama Bypass opened to traffic in December 1987. Due to safety concerns the northbound entry to the Princes Highway from Gipps Street and southbound exit at Spring Creek Drive were removed in December 2002.

Selected proposal display

The five options put on display were assessed against social, land use, traffic and engineering considerations. Of the options considered, the ramp locations providing the greatest overall benefit for the community were determined as: Southbound off ramp at Munna Munnora Creek and the Northbound on ramp at Bland Street.
