Cudgera Creek Road Upgrade
In September 2001, the Roads and Traffic Authority (RTA) commenced investigations for the upgrade of a two kilometre section of Cudgera Creek Road, between the Pacific Highway and Pottsville-Mooball Road. The single carriageway upgrade is an approval condition for the Yelgun to Chinderah upgrade. Construction of the upgrade is to commence within five years of completion of the Yelgun to Chinderah section, which was opened to traffic in August 2002.
Following consultation with local residents, the Yelgun to Chinderah community liaison group, Tweed Shire Council, and relevant government environmental agencies, a preferred route was identified in February 2002.
The upgrade will provide safer and more direct access between the highway and the Pottsville-Mooball Road by:
- Straightening the road alignment.
- Providing a new and improved road design.
- Constructing a wider bridge over Cudgera Creek.
- Providing through access from Pottsville to the Cudgera Creek Road interchange on the highway.
- An improved intersection at the junction of Cudgera Creek and Pottsville-Mooball roads, which maintains access to Mooball via a give-way arrangement.
- Raising the height of the road and bridges to improve flood immunity.
Environmental assessment
A comprehensive environmental assessment was undertaken for the preferred option. This involved an investigation of socio-economic and environment considerations, including flora, fauna, noise, heritage, geotechnical, water quality and hydrological studies.
This assessment is documented in a Review of Environmental Factors (REF), which contains a detailed concept design for the preferred alignment and identifies appropriate measures to minimise the impact of the project on the local community and environment.
