Kempsey bypass

As part of the Building Australia Fund, the Federal Government announced that it would provide $618 million for the construction of the Kempsey bypass, which is part of the approved Kempsey to Eungai project.

The Kempsey Bypass is 14.5 km long and involves building a four-lane divided highway which bypasses Kempsey and Frederickton.

It is the first stage of the approved Kempsey to Eungai upgrade project, which comprises the construction of about 40 km of four-lane divided highway south of Kempsey to north of Eungai Rail.

The Kempsey bypass project will be a combination of a design and construct contract and an alliance agreement.

The design and construct contract will include the main bridging over the Macleay River floodplain. The alliance agreement will include the main road works and all other remaining activities, including preparation of the site for the bridge contractor.

The RTA is forming an alliance project team with Leighton Contractors, AECOM and Coffey Geotechnics.

The RTA will now finalise the commercial arrangement and a project alliance agreement will be signed. The alliance team will then start preparing the detailed design and cost estimates for this part of the project.

The RTA is also continuing with pre-construction work for the bypass, including surveys, geotechnical investigations and property acquisitions.

Early work is expected to start in the first half of 2010.

Main construction will start mid 2010 and it is expected that the project will open to traffic by mid 2014.
