Early Works

In June 2007, SMEC Australia Pty Ltd was awarded the contract to prepare the detailed design for the project.

Field investigations are being undertaken in the vicinity of the approved route and include:

  • Geotechnical investigations.
  • Survey.
  • Ecological studies.
  • Heritage studies.
  • Water quality testing.

Preliminary earthworks on the southern section of the project commenced in November 2007.  Approximately 200,000m3 of material is being placed south of the Myall River to start to build the road embankment in this area.  The material is being excavated from Burdekin’s Gap which is part of the current construction for the Karuah to Bulahdelah Pacific Highway upgrade.

Discussions are continuing with directly affected property owners regarding property acquisition.
