Agencies involved

A number of government agencies are involved during the development, design and construction phases of the project. Legislation, regulation and reporting guidelines need to be met and mechanisms are put in place to ensure compliance during construction. The key government agencies, their website addresses and their area of responsibility are listed below.

NSW Department of Planning (DoP)

The Department of Planning covers:

  • The planning and development control functions in NSW, including the project’s conditions of approval.

NSW Department of Water and Energy (DWE)

The Department of  Water and Energy:

  • Delivers the NSW Government's policy and reform agenda for the water and energy sectors in this state.

Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government

The Department is responsible for:

  • infrastructure planning and coordination;
  • transport safety, including investigations;
  • land transport;
  • civil aviation and airports;
  • transport security;
  • delivery of regional and rural specific services;
  • maritime transport including shipping;
  • regional development;
  • matters relating to local government; and
  • major projects facilitation.

NSW Department of Environment, Climate Change and Water (DECC)

The NSW Department of Environment, Climate Change and Water (DECC), encompasses:

  • The NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service, which covers parks and reserves, cultural heritage and nature and conservation.
  • The Environment Protection Authority is the regulatory authority responsible for waste, water, air, noise and environmental economics amongst other issues.

NSW Department of Primary Industries

Mineral Resources, NSW Agriculture, NSW Fisheries and State Forests of NSW operate under the banner of the NSW Department of Primary Industries (DPI).

 

NSW Heritage Branch

The Heritage Branch (formally Heritage Office), is a state government agency of the Department of Planning.

Great Lakes Council

The Great Lakes Council services an area of 3,373 and is responsible for a community of approximately 34,000 residents.

NSW Roads and Traffic Authority (RTA)

The RTA manages 17,919 kilometres of State roads (including 4250 kilometres of AusLink network and 166 kilometres of privately funded toll roads). This includes facilities such as traffic lights, roundabouts, signs and line marking.

It also manages nearly 3000 kilometres of regional roads and local roads in the unincorporated area of NSW where there are no local councils.

It also provides financial assistance to local councils to manage 18,486 kilometres of regional roads and, to a limited extent, local roads, through funding and other support. Other areas of RTA interest include 4928 bridges, major culverts and nine vehicular ferries.

Among its aims are:

  • Improving road safety.
  • Managing the road network to achieve consistent travel times.

Department of the Environment, Water, Heritage and the Arts

The Australian Government Department of the Environment, Water, Heritage and the Arts (formerly the Department of the Environment and Water Resources) develops and implements national policy, programs and legislation to protect and conserve Australia's environment and heritage and to promote Australian arts and culture.
