Community and stakeholder involvement

A comprehensive community involvement program has been implemented for the project. This program has been developed to ensure ongoing opportunities for community involvement in the project and includes a freecall number (1800 653 092) and this website (see Contact us page).

The Banora Point upgrade project is guided by community and stakeholder involvement, which ascertains the values, issues and concerns of the community. The objectives of the community involvement process are to:

  • Create stakeholder and community awareness of the study and the need for the upgrade.
  • Understand stakeholder and community issues, values and concerns related to the project.
  • Create stakeholder and community awareness of the concept design options and then the preferred concept.
  • Incorporate stakeholder and community issues into each phase of investigation, from the development of concept design options to the refinement of a preferred concept.
  • Assist stakeholders and the community to understand the results of the study and to understand the next steps.

Stay involved

The RTA will continue to keep the community informed regarding the progress of the project. This may include meetings, newsletters and/or advertisements. The project information line will continue to be maintained for the duration of the project.

Previous community involvement activities have included the following:

Community information sessions

A community information session was held at the start of the project at Club Banora (8 June 2004). The purpose of this session was to introduce key members of the project team, describe the project, detail the way the project is conducted, and provide an opportunity for people to obtain information and provide comments. Participants were asked to undertake an information-gathering exercise to help the project team understand issues and locations of local importance.

Another community information session was held in July 2007 at the Banora Point Community Centre. The purpose of this session was to provide an opportunity for people to obtain information and provide comments to the project team about the hydrology and noise technical papers.

Community updates

Community newsletters and updates have been distributed to provide information about project developments. Copies are available by contacting the freecall number (1800 653 092) or by downloading the PDF files on the Public information section of this website.

Advertisements

Newspaper advertisements were placed in local newspapers to notify the community of important project activities. Copies of these advertisements can be downloaded from the Public information section of this website.

Information displays

Information displays were held to receive community comments at important milestones in the project's development.

Three staffed information displays were held in the Tweed City Shopping Centre during the environmental assessment exhibition period. These information displays were held on Saturday 21 February, Thursday 28 February and Thursday 6 March 2008.

To view display information, download the PDF file on the Public information section of this website.

Community liaison group

The community liaison group played an important role in assisting the project team to understand local issues and community concerns. This group was formed in June 2004 and participated in the route evaluation and selection process.

The meeting notes from the community liaison group meetings can be found on the Public information section of this website.

Traffic focus group and noise focus group

In addition, a traffic focus group and a noise focus group were formed in August 2004 to look at traffic and noise investigations in detail for the proposed upgrade.

The meeting notes from the traffic focus group and the noise focus group meetings can be found on the Public information section of this website.

Stakeholder meetings

Stakeholder meetings were held with individual residents and property owners, community groups and other stakeholders throughout the project. Meetings were held with potentially affected landowners in March 2005 to help identify property impacts and issues that required further consideration. Ongoing consultation with landowners has continued throughout the environmental assessment stage.

Information gathered from consultation with the community has assisted in identifying issues and refining the concept design.
