Slope stabilisation works to improve safety at Mulligans Bluff on the Gwydir Highway west of Jackadgery commenced on Monday 28 April 2008.
The $7 million project involves scaling the rock face above the road, reshaping the road to improve alignment, installing rock fall fences and improving the drainage along a 600 metre stretch of the highway. The road will be realigned to remove the current single lane restriction which has been in place at Mulligans Bluff since 2001.
This work will make this section of the highway safer for all road users.
The project
This project is located on the Gwydir Highway approximately 55km west of Grafton (100km east of Glen Innes) and will ultimately reduce the risk of rocks falling onto the highway.
The work is expected to continue until the end of the year, weather permitting.
Current position
To enable the work to be undertaken safely for motorists and workers it is necessary close the highway at Mulligans Bluff each day Monday to Friday, from 9am to 3pm. The highway will remain open on weekends, public and school holidays, however, traffic controls will be in place and some minor delays may be experienced.
Alternative routes between the New England area and the north coast are available via the Waterfall Way or the Bruxner Highway. The detour map is attached below.
