The Project
The project involves replacement of the bridge at Swan Brook 33.7 km west of Glen Innes on the Gwydir Highway. The work consists of demolition of the existing bridge and construction of a new wider concrete structure and wider road approaches.
The new bridge will be built to a high standard, improving safety and travel conditions for motorists travelling on the Gwydir Highway.
Features
Improved load capacity and safety standards of the bridge.
Wider bridge and approaches.
Improved driving conditions for local motorists and their families;
Improved safety from improved pavement, shoulder and bridge widths;
Meet current design standards for width and travel speed;
Reduction in maintenance costs.
Background
The existing concrete slab bridge at Swan Brook was constructed in 1938. The bridge and approaching roads will be widened to provide a safer drive for motorists.
Inverell Shire Council and RTA Northern Road Services have formed an Alliance for the construction of the project. Work commenced in November 2007 and is currently scheduled to be completed by mid 2008 weather permitting.
Improvements
The new bridge has been designed to modern load standards and will provide an improved link for the freight industry to other centres in the region. The project is designed to provide a bridge with wider traffic lanes and improved load capacity.
The adjacent Rest Area internal roads and intersection will be reconstructed in conjunction with the project.
Construction progress at November 2007
The Alliance site compound is located in the existing rest area, on the southern side of the bridge.
Construction of the footings for the new bridge has commenced along with earthworks at the approaches.
Work hours are Monday to Friday, 6:30am to 6pm.
All visitors to the site must report to the site office.
Traffic measures
The existing Swan Brook Rest Area will be closed for the duration of the construction works to enable the new bridge and approaches to be safely constructed.
Speed restrictions and traffic controls will be put into place to ensure the safety of workers and motorists while work is being undertaken.
Motorists are asked to observe all temporary signs and traffic control directions at all times.
The speed limit will be reduced to 40 km/h at times and motorists are asked to drive with care.
