New England Highway and Ferraby Drive intersection

The Roads and Traffic Authority (RTA) is proposing safety improvements at the intersection of the New England Highway and Ferraby Drive at Metford, in response to the crash history at this location.

This project is funded by the Federal Government under the Federal Nation Building Program as a National Blackspot Project.

Background

In the five years between January 2003 and December 2008 there were 10 crashes within 50 metres of this intersection, with four crashes resulting in injury.

Features

The features of the proposed safety improvements include:

• Installation of traffic signals at the intersection of the New England Highway and Ferraby Drive, for southbound traffic on the Highway and for motorists turning into and out of Ferraby Drive.
• Retention of the existing seagull intersection.
• Northbound traffic on the New England Highway will remain unaffected by the traffic signals.
• Motorists who have turned right out of Ferraby Drive will merge with Highway traffic, as they do now.

The project will improve safety by controlling traffic to assist safer right turn movements into and out of Ferraby Drive.

The new signals will be co-ordinated with the traffic signals at South Seas Drive to minimise delays to highway traffic.

Comments on this proposal were invited by 21 October 2009 and will be considered in developing the project.
