Safety improvements at the intersection of the New England Highway and Nelson Street

The Roads and Traffic Authority (RTA) is proposing safety improvements at the intersection of the New England Highway and Nelson Street at Greta in response to the crash history at this location.

This project is funded by the Federal Government under the Federal Nation Building Program, as a National Blackspot Project.

Background

In the five year period between 2003 and 2007 there were eight crashes in the vicinity of the intersection, six of which were injury crashes. The majority of crashes were rear-end crashes involving vehicles travelling south on the New England Highway. There has also been a crash involving a pedestrian at this location.

The proposed project will address the rear-end crash pattern and will provide improved pedestrian facilities for people crossing the New England Highway.

Features

The features of the proposed safety improvements include:

  • Installation of a protected right turn lane for motorists travelling south on the New England Highway and turning right into Nelson Street.
  • Installation of a pedestrian refuge in the concrete island.

Comments on this proposal were invited until 21 October 2009 and will be considered in developing the project.
