The Roads and Traffic Authority (RTA) is proposing safety improvements at the intersection of First Street and Station Street, Weston and at First Street, Government Road and Cessnock Road, in response to the crash history at these locations.
These projects are funded by the Federal Government under the Federal Nation Building Program as a National Blackspot project.
Background
In the five years between 2003 and 2007 there were 11 crashes at the First and Station streets intersection, with eight of the 11 crashes resulting in injury. All of the 11 crashes were cross traffic or turning vehicle crashes.
In the same time period, there were eight crashes near the First Street and Government Road and Cessnock Road intersection, six of which resulted in injuries.
Features
The features of the proposed safety improvements include:
- Installation of traffic signals at the intersection of First Street and Station Street.
- Provision of signalised pedestrian crossings at all four legs of the traffic signals.
- Installation of a median across the Cessnock Road and Government Road intersection.
The new traffic signals will improve safety at First Street and Station Street will improve safety by better controlling motorist and pedestrian movements at this busy location.
The median at First Street, Cessnock Road and Government Road intersection will prevent through movements and right turn movements into and out of Cessnock Road and Government Road.
Motorists wishing to turn right into or out of Government Road or Cessnock Road can use the new traffic signals proposed at First Street and Station Street.
Comments on this proposal were invited until 21 October 2009 and will be considered in developing the project.
