The new Tourle Street Bridge opened to traffic on 7 May 2009.
The new concrete bridge is 255 metres long, with 3.5 metre lanes, two-metre shoulders and a separate 2.1 metre footway on its eastern side. The new alignment on the northern approach will improve safety and traffic flow.
The new bridge was built immediately east of the existing bridge that connects Newcastle with Kooragang Island. It will reduce maintenance costs and ensure access for heavy vehicles to the industrial areas of Kooragang Island.
The new Tourle Street Bridge is an eight-span structure with prestressed concrete girders and a reinforced concrete deck.
Now the new bridge is open to traffic, the existing bridge will be demolished and the site will be landscaped. The RTA has called for registrations of interest for the demolition of the old bridge. The successful company is expected to be announced in October 2009.
The old bridge had deteriorated and was suffering from structural fatigue and could not be economically upgraded for current and future vehicle loads.
