As part of the Great Western Highway upgrade at Wentworth Falls East, the existing two lane highway is being widened to a four lane divided highway from east of Tableland Road to Station Street.
Status
The RTA has completed the detailed design for the project. Tenders for the construction of the project were invited on 27 October 2008 and the contract was awarded to Fulton Hogan Pty Ltd in March 2009.
Funding
This project is jointly funded by the NSW and Federal governments.
Next steps
Highway construction commenced in May 2009.
Project features
- Widening the highway to four lanes with sealed shoulders.
- Upgrading Tableland Road to a ‘seagull’ intersection allowing for all turning movements.
- Providing a central median from east of Tableland Road to Station Street which will be landscaped between Tableland Road and Dalrymple Avenue (east).
- Provision for local road users by installing service roads in some locations and direct access driveways in others.
- Providing a one way service road linking Tableland Road to Shortland Street.
- Providing a one way service road linking Shortland Street to an extension of Sandbox Road.
- Left in/left out only at Shortland Street.
- Left out only at Old Bathurst Road (east).
- Aligning Old Bathurst Road (west) and Dalrymple Avenue (east) to become one intersection with traffic signals and pedestrian crossings allowing for all turning movements.
- Improving the Nelson Avenue service road to provide a shared driveway.
- Raising the westbound carriageway and providing a 2.5 metre shoulder between Nelson and Dalrymple avenues to provide improved and safer driveway access for properties with no alternative street access.
- Providing an off-road cycleway/footpath along the westbound carriageway between Tableland Road and Station Street.
- Providing new traffic lights at the Dalrymple Avenue (west) intersection to allow for all turning movements.
- Providing sedimentation ponds at the corner of Allan Crescent and Railway Parade and on Sandbox Road to control stormwater run-off.
- Urban design and landscaping treatments to enhance both natural bushland and the township.
Project benefits
- Quicker journeys - in the region and to Sydney.
- Improved local access - the Wentworth Falls East upgrade includes changes to several intersections, allowing for safer and more efficient turning movements, as well as safer driveway access for properties.
- Improved cyclist access and safety - access for commuter and long distance cyclists will be provided by a 2.5 metre shoulder between Nelson and Dalrymple avenues.
- Improved pedestrian safety – pedestrians will benefit from an off-road cycleway/footpath, plus new signalised intersections and pedestrian crossings.
- Local environment - Providing sedimentation ponds to control stormwater run-off and landscaping design to enhance both natural bushland and the township.
Community consultation
The RTA will continue to consult with Blue Mountains City Council and the local community to ensure that the needs of highway users, the local community and businesses are met.
Community consultation to date has included:
- An information day on Saturday 3 June 2006 to discuss the concept design and Review of Environmental Factors at the Grand View Hotel in Wentworth Falls.
- Community submissions closed on Friday 23 June 2006 and the Review of Environmental Factors was approved on 27 October, 2006. Detailed design work for the project then commenced.
- On Saturday, 29 March 2008 an information day was held at the Wentworth Falls School of Arts to update members of the community on progress of the project and answer questions.
