The upgrade of the Great Western Highway in the Blue Mountains involves widening the highway to four lanes between Emu Plains and Katoomba and to mostly three lanes between Katoomba and Mount Victoria.
In November 2008 the RTA distributed a community update about current investigations between Pulpit Hill, west of Katoomba and Mount Boyce, east of Mount Victoria.
To clarify, the RTA is examining the highway to:
- Identify locations to improve road safety through additional overtaking lanes.
- See if widening the road shoulder is possible in some areas to improve road safety.
- Consider the efficiency of road arrangements in urban areas and opportunities for safety improvements.
The RTA is not currently considering:
- Widening through the town of Blackheath.
- A new highway alignment between Pulpit Hill and Mount Boyce.
The RTA is committed to involving the community in its project planning.
If the government decides to consider a new alignment or significantly upgrade the highway from Pulpit Hill to Mount Boyce, the RTA would commence a program of community involvement.
