Great Western Highway upgrade - Medlow Bath

As part of the Great Western Highway upgrade, work was completed in December 2003 to widen the two lane highway to a four lane divided highway between the Hydro Majestic Hotel and Cox Avenue at Medlow Bath.

Status

Completed December 2003.

Funding

The project formed part of the Roads of National Importance program funded by the Australian Government.

Project features

  • A new bridge over the railway line on an improved alignment.
  • A new signalised intersection on the new bridge to provide safe access for residents on both sides of the highway.
  • A new bus turn bay in Railway Parade.
  • Righthand turn lanes from the highway to Railway Parade and Station Street.
  • Improved street lighting.
  • Sandstone feature walls to enhance surrounding heritage items.
  • Extensive landscaping to complement the local environment.

Project benefits

The upgrade of this 600 metre section of the Great Western Highway has provided major benefits for the local community as well as for all road users.

  • Pedestrian and cyclist safety - sharp bends on both sides of the previous bridge over the railway were eliminated by constructing a new bridge and approaches, making it safer for road users, pedestrians and cyclists.
  • Improved road safety - the realigned section of the highway and new bridge, incorporating dual two-lane carriageways, provides safety benefits for both local and through traffic.
  • Improved local access - residents can now access the highway from both sides of Station Street and Railway Parade using a new signalised intersection.
  • Local heritage - sandstone feature walls are included to frame the bridge and enhance the heritage appearance of the area.
  • Local environment - landscaping includes native plants to complement the local environment.
