Great Western Highway upgrade - Lapstone Hill

The RTA has completed safety improvements to the 1.5km section of the Great Western Highway between Governors Drive, Lapstone and Mount Street, Glenbrook.

This section of the highway was the site of numerous road accidents. The speed zone for this section of highway was reduced to 70 km/h, however further work was required to improve safety.

Status

Completed - August 2005.

Funding

Fully funded by NSW Government

Project features

  • An extended central median barrier along the full length of the project.
  • A two metre cycle lane on the highway shoulder for westbound cyclists.
  • An extended eastbound shoulder from opposite Mount Street to Knapsack Street.
  • Resurfacing of the existing pavement.
  • An extended concrete barrier on the southern side of the highway.
  • Reduced length of the third westbound lane near Governors Drive so merging is completed before reaching the curve.
  • A series of retaining walls were constructed to support the widened embankment on the southern side of the highway.

Project benefits

  • Improved cyclist safety with widened shoulders.
  • Improved road safety.
  • Noise monitoring carried out after construction shows traffic noise to be similar to, or slightly lower than, the 2005 predicted noise levels in most locations.
  • Landscaping and replanting of trees.
