Road maintenance

What is road maintenance?

There are a number of activities that are classified as road maintenance. Some examples are:

  • Fixing potholes, rough patches and broken edges
  • Recoating bitumen and concrete surfaces
  • Rebuilding roads and bridges

What is maintained?

Maintaining the road surface is the biggest and most expensive road maintenance job. The RTA maintains approximately 20,738 km of main roads; 4,928 bridges, including the Sydney Harbour Bridge, and 9 car ferries.
