Shellharbour Road and Addison Avenue at Lake Illawarra

The RTA has implemented road safety improvements at the junction of Shellharbour Road and Addison Avenue, Lake Illawarra.  There is a history of crashes at this location, with ten crashes occurring in the five year period ending September 2007 – including five crashes resulting in injuries.

The main type of crashes involved right turn movements, with five crashes involving right turn movements into and two crashes involving the right turn out of Addison Avenue.  To prevent these types of crashes, the RTA has closed the median on Shellharbour Road to prevent right turns into and out of Addison Avenue.  The right turn bay for northbound traffic on Shellharbour Road, turning into Pur Pur Avenue, has been extended to provide increased space for vehicles to slow down and wait to turn.

In developing the project, the RTA considered the crash history at the site, traffic volumes accessing and along Addison Avenue and the possible impacts on the surrounding road network.  On balance the road safety benefits were considered to be worthwhile relative to the inconvenience for drivers. Construction work was completed in May 2009.

For more information on this project, please contact the RTA’s Project Manager, Ian Almond on telephone 02 4221 2553 or email Ian_Almond@rta.nsw.gov.au
