Queanbeyan heavy vehicle bypass

North Kiama bypass - Kiama access

In late 2002, the RTA completed modifications to the existing accesses to Kiama at Gipps Street and Spring Creek Drive.

These modifications were to improve safety at these intersections by making the intersections left-in and left-out only. The section between the Kiama Bypass and the Bombo interchange will be six lanes wide to allow for local traffic between Kiama and North Kiama.

Motorists in Kiama wishing to travel to North Kiama will access the bypass via Spring Creek Drive, the dedicated left-turn-out lane joining the two northbound lanes on the existing Kiama Bypass giving three lanes northbound until the Bombo interchange, where the left lane becomes the off-ramp and the other two lanes continue north towards Wollongong.

Similarly, motorists wishing to travel to Kiama from North Kiama will join the bypass at the Bombo interchange, the on-ramp joining the two southbound lanes on the bypass giving three lanes until Gipps Street, where the third lane turns into Gipps Street. Thus local traffic will be able to travel between Kiama and North Kiama using the bypass without having to change lanes.

In 2003, the State Government announced that additional access ramps to the Kiama Bypass will be built. The location of the new ramps will be subject to discussion between the RTA and Kiama Council.
