Kiama Bypass access ramps

Background

The Roads and Traffic Authority in consultation with Kiama Council investigated options to construct additional access ramps to the Kiama Bypass. Following the display of a shortlist of five options in April and May 2005, further engineering, environmental and financial studies were undertaken to determine the location of the new southbound off and northbound on ramps.  The five options put on display were assessed against social, land use, traffic and engineering considerations. Following consideration of the options it was determined that the ramp locations providing the greatest overall benefit for the community were:

  • Southbound off-ramp at Munna Munnora Creek
  • Northbound on-ramp at Bland Street.

Benefits

  • Greater reduction of traffic in the Kiama central business district.
  • No height restrictions.
  • Ramps are located centrally.
  • Ramps will cater for future growth.
  • Cost effective.

Open to traffic

The northbound on-ramp was opened to traffic in October 2008. The work involved the construction of a new ramp onto the Princes Highway from Bland Street, construction of a 128m long concrete retaining wall and construction of a new roundabout on Bland Street.

The southbound off-ramp opened to traffic in February 2009. The work involved constructing a new ramp off the Princes Highway on South Kiama Drive, relocating a water main and construction of an acceleration lane onto South Kiama Drive.

Media release - February 2009

The Member for Kiama, Matt Brown, today announced the new southbound Kiama off-ramp at Munna Munnora Creek is set to open to traffic on Thursday, February 26.

Review of environmental factors - July 2006

The NSW Roads and Traffic Authority (RTA) proposes to construct a southbound exit ramp linking the Princes Highway to South Kiama Drive (Proposal site 1) and a northbound entry ramp linking Bland Street to the Princes Highway (Proposal site 2). Each of the proposed ramps would feature a single travel lane with shoulders and guardrails.

Submission report

This Submission Report relates to the Review of Environmental Factors (REF) prepared for the proposed construction of a northbound entry ramp and a southbound exit ramp on the Princes Highway, Kiama (Kiama Bypass).

Community update

The Roads and Traffic Authority in consultation with Kiama Council has been investigating options to construct additional access ramps to the Kiama Bypass. The 5.3km long Princes Highway Kiama Bypass opened to traffic in December 1987. Due to safety concerns the northbound entry to the Princes Highway from Gipps Street and southbound exit at Spring Creek Drive were removed in December 2002.

Selected proposal display

The five options put on display were assessed against social, land use, traffic and engineering considerations. Of the options considered, the ramp locations providing the greatest overall benefit for the community were determined as: Southbound off ramp at Munna Munnora Creek and the Northbound on ramp at Bland Street.
