The project involves upgrading the intersection of Lookout Road and the entrance to John Hunter Hospital, New Lambton Heights.
The $4 million project is fully funded by the State Government.
Increasing traffic on the Highway between Kotara and Lambton has resulted in the need to upgrade some intersections. The RTA has completed improvements at the Peatties Road, Kimbara Close and Carnley Avenue intersections and will now be replacing the existing roundabout at the entrance to John Hunter Hospital with traffic signals.
As part of the project, access to Ridgeway Road and Bushland Close will be restricted to left in and left out only.
Benefits
Reduced delays and improved travel times along the route due to the increased capacity of the new intersection.
Improved traffic flow through traffic signals co-ordinated with other signals along the route.
Increased capacity for through and turning traffic by provision of two through lanes and two right-turn bays into the hospital.
Improved pedestrian safety with signalised pedestrian crossings for local residents, hospital patients and staff. Pedestrians will no longer need to cross the road in traffic gaps.
Construction
Major work commenced in April 2005 and is expected to be completed by the end of September 2005. Construction is being undertaken by the RTA.
