The Esplanade – planned upgrade between Fairfax and Main roads Warners Bay

The Roads and Traffic Authority (RTA) has completed upgrading The Esplanade between Fairfax Road, Warners Bay and Main Road at Speers Point, to improve road safety for pedestrians and motorists.

The project was funded under the Australian Government Blackspot Program.

Features

  • A ‘seagull’ type intersection on The Esplanade to improve safety for motorists turning right into and out of Thompson Road.
  • Two pedestrian refuges on The Esplanade: one near Thompson Road and another near Morse Street.
  • An on-road cyclist facility between Ryan and Albert streets on the southern side of The Esplanade.
  • Road safety barriers between Ryan Street and Thompson Road to separate oncoming traffic.
  • Extended right-turn bay from The Esplanade into Albert Street.
  • Relocated merge to one lane to west of Ryan Street for westbound traffic.
  • Improved safety for motorists turning right on to The Esplanade from Ryan Street.
  • Restricted turning at Morse Street to left-turn in and left-turn out only.
  • Extended guardrail on the southern side of The Esplanade towards Fairfax Road/Medcalf Street.
  • A new safety barrier in front of the carpark near Ryan Street.

Community involvement

The RTA refined the design of the project following community comment in April 2005.  The improvements were completed in July 2006.
