Tenders have been called for construction of the bus waiting area to be built on a section of the Warringah Freeway at Cammeray.
Construction tenders will close in late November 2009 with work on the $16 million facility is expected to begin in early 2010. The facility will allow more than 30 buses to get in and out of the Sydney CBD faster during the evening traffic peak.
The 500-metre long bus waiting area will be located on the eastern side of the freeway and extend from just north of the Miller Street bridge to a point where the Miller Street on-ramp meets the Ernest Street bridge.

Construction of the bus waiting area will involve widening a section of the Warringah Freeway on the eastern side and re-locating the on-ramp from Miller Street closer to the Cammeray Golf Course. The space created by this work will house the bus waiting area without affecting existing traffic lanes or bus lanes.
The waiting area will provide a safe waiting area near the CBD for buses that carry thousands of passengers to the north-western suburbs in a two-hour period during the evening peak. Buses using the waiting area will be able to reach the CBD within 12 minutes. This will enable buses operating on M2 motorway services to better meet timetables for the evening peak.
The facility will also eliminate the need for buses to circulate on city streets before picking up passengers and help cater for future growth in M2 bus patronage, which is growing rapidly each year as suburbs expand in Sydney’s north-west. In 2006, M2 bus services to the CBD were moving 8,500 passengers a day. In 2009, 611 trips on the M2 corridor are carrying 13,800 passengers a day.
The waiting area will be built in stages to minimise disruptions to traffic. Construction work is expected to be completed in late 2010, weather permitting.
