How traineeships work

Traineeships provide you with paid work while you gain formal training both in the workplace and off-the-job.

Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) supports and records your progress, providing a range of work to develop your knowledge and skills, leading to a qualification.

Trainees are paid under an appropriate industrial agreement, called a 'training contract', which is signed by RMS and the trainee, and then registered with the Department of Education and Training (DET).

You will be learning on-the-job from your supervisors, work team and through your daily tasks and projects. You will also attend formal training in blocks and will be able to apply your new skills in the workplace.

RMS pays for your attendance at training, ensuring you are given sufficient development opportunities to achieve your certificate.

We fund the academic component of the traineeship, offer a competitive salary, with continual learning and development throughout the traineeship.

Traineeships take 12 or 24 months to complete depending on which one you apply for. They are available throughout the metropolitan area of Sydney and other RMS locations such as Wollongong, Hunter Region, Wagga Wagga, Parkes, Grafton and Dubbo.
