What future employment can a scholarship holder have with Roads and Maritime Services (RMS)?

Scholarships are for a limited duration. We encourage scholars to apply for a place on RMS Grad program at the conclusion of their studies.

What sort of study would I be doing?

Your study depends on the Program you are studying. For example:

  • Computer Systems Officers in Training and Traffic Operations Officers in Training will complete part time studies at TAFE NSW to attain an Advanced Diploma in Electrical Engineering (Computer Systems).
  • Road Designers in Training will complete an Associate Degree in Engineering (Civil Engineering) at the University of Southern Queensland part time.
  • Property Officers in Training will complete an Associate Degree in Spatial Science (Geographic Information Systems) at the University of Southern Queensland part time.
  • Traffic Engineering Officer in Training will complete the Diploma of Civil Construction Design course at the Leeton TAFE

Only at Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) will you be given training by acknowledged industry experts and have the chance to undertake diverse and interesting projects while you earn a starting salary of $39,759.

You will also have your tertiary studies and study materials paid for and receive paid study leave to complete assignments or prepare for upcoming exams!

What is the criteria for a Paraprofessional positions?

  • Road Designer in Training:
    • Higher School Certificate (or equivalent) with Standard English and minimum 2 Unit Mathematics (Queensland: Maths A with Maths B well regarded).
    • Eligibility for enrolment in the Associate Degree in Engineering (Civil Engineering) at the University of Southern Queensland (USQ).
  • Computer Systems and Traffic Operations Officers in Training:
    • Completed a tertiary qualification in Certificate III level in Electrical, Electro Technology, Computer Science or relevant Information Technology disciplines to be eligible for this position.
    • Must be eligible to enrol or currently enrolled in TAFE NSW Advanced Diploma in Electrical Engineering (Computer Systems).
  • Property Officers in Training:
    • Completed Year 12 HSC (or equivalent) with pass in English and Mathematics Level 2 (not General Mathematics)
    • Eligibility for enrolment or enrolled in the Associate Degree in Spatial Science (Geographic Information Systems) at the University of Southern Queensland.
  • Traffic Engineering Officer in Training
    • A High School Certificate (or equivalent) with results in mathematics and science.
    • Partial completion of or eligible for enrolment in, the Diploma of Civil Construction Design course or equivalent qualification.

Do I get time off work to study and if so how much?

All Paraprofessionals are entitled to study leave and examination leave of 20 days per year.


Does RMS pay for all my study fees?

RMS will cover the cost of all course related fees and study material each year.


What work tasks will Paraprofessionals be expected to carry out?

Your work will depend on:

  • Your field of study,
  • The development you require,
  • The current RMS projects.

How do new Paraprofessionals learn about RMS as a workplace?

All paraprofessionals will attend a corporate induction at the commencement of their employment with RMS. This induction outlines RMS' expectations, structure, policies and procedures.
