How many graduates do you recruit each year?
The number of graduates recruited for each discipline varies on business need.
When does Roads and Maritime Services (replacing Roads and Traffic Authority) recruit?
Roads and Maritime Services will recruit mid year (around June). Graduates accepted in to the program will commence February the following year.
What is involved in the selection process?
There are 7 steps in the selection process:
- Online application: To apply, complete an online application. This step also requires uploading your CV and academic transcript.
- Online assessment: Shortlisted candidates are invited to complete a selection of online assessments, designed to measure a number attributes to help assess your suitability for the role.
- Assessment centre: Candidates who are further short-listed are asked to attend a 3 hour assessment centre in Sydney to learn more about Roads and Maritime Services’ program, and undertake some group and individual activities.
- Online behavioural profile: You will be invited to complete an online self-report behavioural questionnaire.
- Panel interview: All progressing candidates will be asked to participate in a selection panel interview with Roads and Maritime Services staff and the recruitment agency representatives.
- Reference checks: Reference checks are conducted with two referees as a final step in the selection process.
- Final decision and offer: The recruitment agency initially provide verbal offers to all successful graduates. Written letters of offer will then be provided by Roads and Maritime Services. Validation of qualifications and other key documents are required before formal acceptance.
What is the eligibility criteria?
To be eligible for the Graduate Program, graduates are required to:
- Have completed, or are completing, a recognised Undergraduate Bachelor Degree Qualification
- Provide documentary evidence recognising overseas qualifications in Australia
- Hold a current Australian Drivers Licence
- Be willing to undertake job rotations around NSW
- Be willing to have a Criminal & Investigation Check undertaken
How is the Graduate Program structured?
- Roads and Maritime Services Graduate Program duration is 2-3 years
- Graduates undertake six rotational placements each of 6 months duration
- Each placement gives graduates experience in an area of work consistent with the required skill development for their particular discipline
- Graduates have the option to request a placement in an area outside their discipline. This will enable the graduate to supplement their skills and knowledge base and to gain a broader perspective of Roads and Maritime Services' various activities
- Graduate work will be project based
- At least one placement is away from your headquarters
- Civil engineering graduates undertake at least two regional NSW placements
- At the end of 2 years on the program, Graduates who have completed their placement requirements are eligible to apply for substantive positions within Roads and Maritime Services

- The starting salary for first year graduates is $62,400+ per annum, plus superannuation and annual increases

- Graduates initially participate in a 6 day Orientation where the focus is on learning about Roads and Maritime Services, getting to know one another, and to meet with senior managers, specialists and Directors. There are also site visits to the Roads and Maritime Services Crash Lab, the Transport Management Centre and an opportunity to climb the Sydney Harbour Bridge
- Roads and Maritime Services Graduates receive on-the-job training and formal training to develop required skills in topics such as Business Writing, Presentation Skills and Project management. There is also training available for particular placements or roles, and an annual Graduate Conference focusing on professional development and networking
- All staff have access to our library and a comprehensive range of online learning resources
- Graduates wanting to complete further study are eligible for financial assistance in the second year on the Graduate Program, where Roads and Maritime Services reimburses 75 per cent of the full cost of the course

- Each Graduate has the option to select their own Roads and Maritime Services mentor, who has been trained to assist graduates in their career development during the Program
- For each discipline, a senior Roads and Maritime Services professional from the business is available to support Graduates and assist in sourcing suitable placements that meet skill and professional development needs

Develop networks and connections
- We offer a range of social and professional networking groups as well as communications to develop relationships and keep in touch with colleagues. For example, the Young Professionals Network offers formal and informal networking opportunities, and a opportunities to implement initiatives of interest such as supporting specific charities or causes. Other Roads and Maritime Services affiliations include a very active Rec Club, Spokeswomen’s Program, Professional Women’s Network, Alumni and other specialist interest groups

- Your employment doesn’t end when you finish your Graduate Program. Graduates are eligible to apply for substantive positions in their final year
When does the GRAD program start?
Graduates will commence in February each year.
Do I need to be an Australian resident to apply?
Yes. To be eligible to work for Roads and Maritime Services all graduates must hold Australian Citizenship or Permanent Residency Status.
What sort of training will I receive?
- Structured training is given to each graduate in the form of:
- Orientation
- Business Writing
- Project Management
- Presentation Skills
- Time Management
- On-the-job training is delivered at each placement
- Specific training is conducted when a graduate is in a placement
Where will I be located?
- Graduates work in Roads and Maritime Services office locations across the Sydney metropolitan area and regional locations including Newcastle, Wollongong, Parkes, Grafton and Wagga
Do I have to do an out-of-area placement?
- This depends on your discipline. Graduates are generally required to complete at least one placement outside of their headquarters
- For Civil Engineering graduates two placements are required away from their headquarters
Does Roads and Maritime Services help with relocation?
- For out-of-area placements Roads and Maritime Services will pay for:
- Removal cost
- Relocation travel costs
- Rental subsidy; and
- Monthly return trips to your headquartered office
When do I find out where my first placement will be and what information will I receive?
- Two months before starting all new graduates are called to inform them of their first placement and location
- Graduates going to a placement away from their headquarters receive an email which briefly outlines where their placement will be, name of their supervisor and their contact details
- Each graduate then receives an invitation through the mail to attend Orientation
When do I meet my supervisor for the first time?
- All supervisors are invited to attend the Graduate Orientation so that graduates can meet them prior to commencing at the workplace
- All graduates are encouraged to contact their supervisors before commencement to arrange a meeting with them and to visit the workplace
