What is an apprenticeship?

Apprenticeships are jobs that also give you trade training through a combination of on-the-job and TAFE-based study. When you successfully finish an apprenticeship you are issued with a Certificate of Proficiency.

Recruitment takes place towards the end of the school year, usually around August.

Is there an application test? When is it on?

Yes, there is a test. If you are selected for interview you’ll have to complete both a mathematical test and a literacy test.


What types of apprenticeships are offered?

Roads and Maritime Services offers the following apprenticeships:

Boilermaker
Bridge and Wharf Carpenter

How long do apprenticeships last?

Apprenticeships are for a maximum of four years.

The first three months of your apprenticeship are a probation period.


What type of training does an apprentice do?

Apprentices complete a Certificate III trade course. You are assessed on your knowledge and the skills you can perform in the workplace.


Is there any other training?

Apprentices receive training in Occupational Health and Safety (White card), Work Activity (Blue card), manual handling, traffic control and extra training, as required, depending on what you need to do at your workplace.


What does Roads and Maritime Services provide?

Roads and Maritime Services:

  • Gives you a range of work to develop your knowledge and skills.
  • Supports and records your progress.
  • Pays for you to attend your training.

Do apprentices have to wear a uniform?

The required clothing depends on the apprentice’s work location. For instance, at a construction worksite, safety clothing is provided.


What happens after the apprenticeship?

As you finish your apprenticeship you are encouraged to apply for any suitable jobs advertised in Roads and Maritime Services or the broader public sector.

All jobs are awarded on merit and require an application, an interview and referee checks.


What do I need to be eligible for an apprenticeship with Roads and Maritime Services?

To be eligible for an apprenticeship you:

  • Must have completed Year 10 and obtained the School Certificate or equivalent certificate.
  • Must be at least 16 years of age when starting your apprenticeship
  • Must agree for Roads and Maritime Services to do a Criminal & Investigation Check
  • Must be a citizen or permanent resident of Australia.
