Government Agencies Road Safety Council (GARS)

Role

  • Co-ordinate Government road safety initiatives consistent with the goals outlined in the Road Safety 2010 strategy.
  • Keep abreast of road safety developments in partner agencies that may have an impact on member organisations.
  • Monitor and evaluate against road safety goals and targets.
  • Examine the analysis of up-to-date trends of road deaths and injuries and crash related problems and discuss the potential for joint countermeasures.

Authority

GARS was established by the Minister, at the suggestion of the RTA's Chief Executive, following the disbanding of the Road Safety Advisory Council in December 1999. The membership will be reviewed annually to assess its effectiveness.

Membership

Membership is by invitation from the RTA's Chief Executive. All members are Chief Executives, or their nominees. The Chair is the RTA's Chief Executive. Member agencies are:

  • NSW Police Service
  • Attorney General's Department
  • Motor Accidents Authority.
  • NSW Health Department
  • Department of Education and Training
  • Department of Local Government
  • Department of Transport

Meetings

Meetings are held privately, however briefings and presentations from outside parties are sometimes received at the invitation of Council.
