Role
The role of the Bicycle Advisory Council is to:
- Provide the RTA with advice and recommendations on all bicycle related matters
- Facilitate all activities of the RTA which impinge on bicycling
- Assist in the efficient co-ordination of effective programs to benefit cyclists throughout the State, public and private sectors
- Facilitate, but not necessarily undertake, provision for cyclists by all levels of Government
- Assist in the development and on-going review of the RTA strategic plans for bicycles
- Provide an effective consultative forum for cyclist organisations and Government to consider matters related to providing for cyclists.
Authority
The Council was established to advise the Minister for Roads through the RTA's Chief Executive, on all matters concerning bicycle use, road safety and facilities.

Meetings
Although meetings are held privately, briefings and presentations from outside parties are sometimes received at the invitation of the Council.
The RTA supplies policy advice and support to the Council administration.
Submissions
Generally, submissions to the Council are open to public scrutiny. However, there are matters which may be classified as confidential. Council will determine how material is to be classified except in instances where, say, the Minister might seek advice on proposed Government policy issues.
